  • Course Overview

    This course provides a foundational grounding on issues of institutional racism, and how this can manifest in higher education institutions (HEIs). It also provides introductory information on self-advocacy, being an effective ally, combating imposter syndrome, and how to prioritize your wellbeing. It is for anyone who has experienced institutional racism or is committed to building equitable communities in HEIs. 

    Learning Outcomes

    This course will help you to:

    1. Recognize how institutional racism creates barriers and promotes inequity in HEIs
    2. Identify prominent forms of institutional racism within HEIs 
    3. Advocate for yourself in a way that feels safe and empowering 
    4. Practice allyship in a way that’s meaningful and constructive 
    5. Combat imposter syndrome and work toward feeing more confident in your abilities 

    • Course Instructor: Dr. Melissa Jogie

      • Dr. Melissa Jogie

        Dr. Melissa Jogie is the Director for Research Culture, Impact, and Early Career Development at the University of Roehampton. As an Associate Professor, her interdisciplinary research focuses on fostering human flourishing among marginalized groups, including those experiencing homelessness and violence against women and girls. Melissa holds prestigious fellowships, including the UKRI Policy Fellowship (2024-25). Between 2020 and 2024, she secured over £1.4 million in funding, leading 24 projects. In addition to her research, Melissa co-directs Advance HE’s Diversifying Leadership Programme, serves on the Research External Advisory Group, and leads on the Research Leadership Development Programme. She earned her PhD in Comparative Education Systems at the Australian National University in 2017, with a Visiting Fellowship at Oxford's Centre for Comparative and International Education in 2015.           This module will help you to:

          1. Identify prominent forms of institutional racism within HEIs 
          2. Recognize specific sensitivities and challenges faced by those experiencing institutional racism 
          3. Explore strategies to manage and reduce the impact of institutional racism 
        • Module Three: Self-Advocacy and Being an Ally

          This module will help you to:

          1. Advocate for yourself in a way that feels safe and empowering 
          2. Practice allyship in a way that’s meaningful and constructive 
          3. Commit to establishing a more inclusive and secure HEI community for all 
        • Module Four: Managing Mental Health and Wellbeing

          This module will help you to:

          1. Identify the deficit model and how this operates in HEIs 
          2. Recognize forms of imposter syndrome 
          3. Manage imposter syndrome and feel more confident in your abilities 
          4. Acknowledge the importance of self-care to support wellbeing
