  • Course Overview

    This course builds on the foundational Sage Campus online course Digital Humanities for Beginners, advancing learners' understanding by applying their knowledge in practice. Through projects and interactive exercises, this course equips humanities students at any level with the skills and perspectives needed to tackle real-world digital humanities challenges. By engaging with a range of key topics and tools, students will develop a nuanced understanding of how digital methods can be used to analyze and interpret humanities data and leave prepared to tackle projects with confidence.  

    Learning Outcomes

    This course will help you to:

    1. Apply digital humanities concepts to specific research questions  
    2. Learn how to teach yourself unfamiliar tools   
    3. Identify the elements of a successful digital humanities project  
    4. Recognize common obstacles and limitations in digital humanities practice

      • Basia Kapolka

        Basia Kapolka is the Digital Humanities Librarian at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. With a background in theater and philosophy, she is passionate about storytelling and continuously asking the question, “why?” She was drawn to digital humanities for its ability to merge these interests, using technology to explore timeless human questions and present the findings in innovative ways.

      • Pre-Course Self Assessment

          This module will help you to:

          1. Identify theories that will help with the analysis and summary of data  
          2. Recognize the key steps in conceiving and planning a digital humanities project 
          3. Choose the most suitable tools for various research questions  
          4. Master new tools and technologies while recognizing their limitations 
        • Module Two: Digital Project Management

          This module will help you to:

          1. Identify project types and define their scope   
          2. Manage resources and draft a project plan  
          3. Develop benchmarks for timely deliverables  
        • Module Three: Reviewing a Completed Project

          This module will help you to:

          1. Identify the research questions guiding a digital humanities project  
          2. Examine project documentation to determine what data, tools, and methods were used in its creation  
          3. Evaluate a digital humanities project based on its stated intentions  
        • Module Four: Real World Application

          This module will help you to:

          1. Recognize how various disciplines benefit from digital humanities research 
          2. Explore digital humanities projects and their contributions to humanities scholarship 
          3. Identify roles on a digital humanities project team
          4. Anticipate common obstacles with digital humanities projects
        • References and Glossary of Key Terms

        • Post-Course Self Assessment

          Now you’ve completed the course, spend a few moments reflecting on where your familiarity with the topics and your confidence skills levels are at now.
